Government further relieves flood victims

(KPL) Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Thongloun
Sisoulith presented a review of the damages caused by the recent flood to members of the diplomatic corps and representatives of international organization at the International Co-operation Training Centre, here on 25 August.
At this meeting, Dr Thongloun spoke on the problems caused by the flood and the search for solutions to provide the best form of assistance to the flood victims.
Speaking on behalf of the Lao government and the people of Laos, he thanked the guests at this meeting for their contributions which were in the form of money and materials to fight against the rising water of the Mekong River, some days ago.
He also gave a breakdown of the assistance in monetary terms: Thailand- US$15 million; Japan-US$111,000; Australia-US$150,000. Friendly organizations also gave assistance and they contributed US$700,000.
In his speech, Dr Thongloun touched on the long-term impact of the flood, how the Lao government is trying to solve this problem and asked for support from the various countries and international organizations. Speaking on the present need, he said, “There is a need to undertake immediate relief action and so give priority to the provision of food and medical aid to the flood victims.”
Spokesmen from the government ministries and bodies also gave their reports to the audience on the negative impact of the flood.
