China to help develop Lao space technology

(KPL) China will help Laos develop a satellite –based communication system under an agreement signed on Friday.
Covered under the agreement is the development of a Lao telecommunications satellite and ground station programme, and operational training for Lao staff, according to a press release from the National Authority for Science and Technology.
Minister to the Prime Minister’s Office and National Authority for Science and Technology Head, Professor Dr Bountiem Phissamay, last week signed the science and space technology cooperation framework agreement.
The agreement was brought from Beijing to Vientiane and had already been signed by China’s National Space Administration Head, Mr Sun Laiyan.
The Chinese will exchange technical information with Laos in the fields of earth observation, remote sensing satellite technology and the application of remote sensing data.
The two authorities will also cooperate to exchange information about satellite imaging and develop a programme to read data from satellite images.The agreement was made possible after discussions between officials from the two organizations and reflects the fruitful relationship of the two governments.
the Lao government believes developing the country’s expertise in science and space technology will be beneficial for the country’s socio-economic development.
According to the press release, it will assist progress in telecommunications, long distance transmission of audio visual material and can also be used for national land surveys.
The signing ceremony took place in Vientiane and was attended by high –ranking Lao official, Chinese official and diplomats.
